Cloud computing can help local governments to spur economic development, expand citizen services, and break through siloed bureaucracy by providing innovative & scalable services without wasting taxpayer funds on expensive and inflexible hardware infrastructure.
We've already seen a lot of amazing work, including GIS applications, emergency preparedness and response, open access to data, mobile applications, and more.
Our new City on a Cloud Innovation challenge is designed to recognize and reward the technologists responsible for putting the cloud to use for the benefit of local governments in eligible countries around the world.
In the first phase of the competition, AWS and a panel of experts in the field of local government innovation will select a total of seven grand prize winners in the following two categories:
Best Practices - Three prizes of $50,000 in AWS credits will recognize local governments that have already adopted cloud technology. One prize is reserved for a local government serving up to 50,000 people, another for a local government serving 50,001 to 250,000 people, and a third for a local government serving over 250,000 people.
Partners in Innovation - Four prizes of $25,000 in AWS credits will recognize application developers (individuals or companies) who build applications to solve the challenges faced by local governments.
