Why use Kinesis and Storm? I had been under the impression that Kinesis does what Storm does.

Can you please clarify why to run both Kinesis and Storm. What are the use cases for running both Kinesis and Storm and what are the advantages of just running Kinesis? Is Storm recommended for more complex workloads?

Rahul V. Patil

Kinesis managed service and Storm are complimentary technologies. The Kinesis managed service enables customers to stream in real-time data at 1000 transactions per second per shard, while a Storm cluster enables crunching the incoming data.

The Kinesis offering also comes with the Kinesis Client Library (KCL)- a framework to process incoming data reliably and elastically. When using Kinesis managed service, developers have the choice to use KCL, Storm or any other favorite technology stack to process incoming data. The Kinesis Storm Spout discussed in the blog just makes it simpler for Storm developers to consume the Kinesis stream.
