Among all of this buzz today, I'm not able to find an answer to simple question: once I launch G2 instance, which type of software shall I use on my laptop in order to access to the G2 instance in GUI mode? At the moment, I'd just like to try running some desktop environment (say with a compositing window manager, for some 3D effects and alike stuff) within Amazon Linux AMI, and connect from my laptop. So far, I would access my Amazon Linux AMI through SSH, but now: which type of client to use to access in GUI mode? Seems like there is a hint in the last section of your post above - is simply any sort of VNC client to be used here (and what is the improvement over using plain VNC server in this case)? What is with this NVIDIA GRID VCA Workspace client that is presented on some of YouTube clips about GRID - is it available in general, and for Linux in particular, and is it any faster than using plain VNC? I really think you should have had this aspect of the whole story explained better in the announcement, or otherwise, as without this piece, it all seems (well, at least for me) rather confusing...

OK, to answer to my own question above: One should select one of OTOY images from AWS Marketplace, instead of one of AMIs with NVIDIA GRID driver, as former seems to have everything prepared for "streaming" desktop when run (still I have no clue on what to do in order for "streaming" to be activated, and how to connect to Amazon Linux AMI with NVIDIA GRID GPU Driver). So I tried with Octane Cloud Workstation (Linux) AMI. Once when AMI instance is running, one would connect through SSH, and run "ps -edalf | grep GUID", and pick up GUID string from outoput. Then, in a Web browser, one would connect to following URL: http://aws.otoy.com/?connect=//ip:8090/?NOCRYPTO=1;AUDIO=1;STATUS=1;AUTOLOCK=0;WAN=12;GUID=guid, where ip is to be replaced with public address of the running instance, and guid is to be replaced with GUID string found above. Ubuntu desktop will appear then in the browser window, and it could be used as usual.

I tried with running glxgears, and then couple YouTube videos in this remote desktop. My connection is 8.5 Mbps down and 0.85 Mbps up, and these two applications are not usable - the screen get blurred all the time, it's just that it doesn't feel like desktop, but like a video over too slow connection instead. Hope this will improve along the way, but NX for example still rules this as remote desktop solution any day.

I am a PhD student from the UK and am currently developing an OpenCL application for visualizing the behaviour of dynamical systems. I originally wanted to make it web based using WebGL and WebCL, but found that they are currently a bit limited for my needs and so I went with Python instead. I think these new instances + ORBX.js would let me achieve my original plan of building a web app and I'd like to have a go at porting it over. Is there any possibility of getting a free trial instance to experiment with?
