Awesome news Jeff and Nihar. We will definitely be taking advantage of these features at the Star.

John Mark Mitchell

Jeff, Nihar and the whole AWS team:
This is incredible news. This is a feature I have rallied support for since CloudFront's introduction. Thanks so much for your consistent introduction of features like this.

Wait -- $600 per month per certificate ??? Please tell us that's a typo ...

Victor

The pricing is way too high! 600 USD per certificate!

Nick S.

$600/month*zone for custom SSL? That's nuts!

(Especially considering normal SSL is already more expensive per-request. A custom cert. can't add an extra $600/month*zone in overhead computational costs …)

Tom

Any news on when support for POST HTTP requests will be added?

Mr C

Good work, but the SSL pricing is laughable. Care to explain the cost, hardware acceleration isn't that expensive.

Also... SPDY?

Martin

600USD per month is too much. I wonder what Amazons cost associated with custom SSL certificates is to justify such a high price.

Craig Smith

And I thought Edgecast at $200/month was ridiculous. Wow.

Tim

$600 per month. What the heck is going on? - that would be 30% of my Cloudfront cost...

Philip

So the cost of the customer SSL is equivalent to one on-demand High-Memory Double Extra Large Instance (34.2 GiB of memory, 13 EC2 Compute Units (4 virtual cores with 3.25 EC2 Compute Units each), 850 GB of local instance storage). I don't think Amazon has that kindda hardware allocated to handle my custom SSL...

Olivier

The SSL pricing is quite reasonable. I expect they need to give you your own IP to allow custom SSL certificates. I've seen CDN providers change thousands of dollars per month for such feature.

Nick S.

Oliver: If this is SNI-based, no dedicated IPs are needed.

Moreover, since Cloudfront offers SSL already (just with their cert) for a trivial cost, there's /no way/ it costs them another $600/mo in overhead for your cert. Nuts.

Scott

We were so excited for the custom SSL - we even had a meeting with our programmers on how it was going to revolutionize our entire business model... Then we saw the $600 a month price tag. (Double Gulp) The astronomical price of the SSL alone would cost more than our companies entire dedicated server costs per month. Great idea - extremely prohibitive price. :-(

Tim Simons

This is not SNI-based. You get at least 1 IP per location which is probably why it costs $600...

Nick

Would be great if you offered an affordable SNI-only version. (Internet Explorer on XP users make up <0.1% of our visitors, and none of our users. We're happy to move to SNI-only.)

TheTestTube

$600 per month doesn't scale down do SMEs and is not affordable to many startups :(

Thefalken

"This is not SNI-based. You get at least 1 IP per location which is probably why it costs $600..."
Except they hand out freshly baked IPv4 address at the drop of a hat i.e. for VPC end points, for nothing like that cost.

So are they just charging it because they can ?

Tim

Great feature, but still useless without POST support.

You only get a 'free' IPv4 address if you attach it to a running instance. The lowest cost instance being a T1.Micro and the lowest cost being $0.02. * 720 hours * 40 locations = $576 per month

From their history AWS isn't in the practice of charging more than they have to.
