Pardon my lack of enthusiasm... While it's nice that you've increased the maximum performance for Provisioned IOPS volumes, today -- 10 months following the launch of PIOPS -- there are still a number of AZs which don't support the feature at all. What's the ETA on that and what are your customers with reserved instances in those zones to do? MattJ's response to this question two months ago ("Some AZs will not have PIOPS volumes made available and I understand this is an inconvenience for you.") was disappointing to say the least.

Seems to indicate that the ETA is nowish?


PIOPS only seems to impact read latency. I've experimented in the past and the write latency of 100 PIOPS is the same as for 2000 PIOPS. I doubt 4000 PIOPS is any different but I'm going to spin one up and test it today. In my opinion write latency is the biggest performance bottleneck/problem with AWS today.


@ShakataGaNai, unfortunately no. It's in all regions, but not all in AZs of all regions. I checked before posting and two of my five AZs in us-east-1 still don't support PIOPS volumes.

I guess in three months when my reserved instance term runs out I could move my instances to an AZ that supports PIOPS (glad I didn't opt for the three-year term) but the lack of uniformity of feature availability sets a dangerous precedent: If you commit to an AZ by buying reserved instances, there's no guarantee that you will be able to take advantage of new features, even if they're prominently advertised as "supported in all AWS regions."

@Craig - Provisioned IOPS is designed to deliver consistent I/O performance. I believe you are referring the read latency of Provisioned IOPS compared to Standard EBS. In general, Provisioned IOPS latencies are lower for read and write I/Os.

As you mentioned, number of IOPS provisioned will have a limited impact on the latency.
