It's interesting that Intel are spending time looking at whether chip architecture can be optimised for cloud style workloads i.e. applications running on the likes of Hadoop, Memcached and the LAMP stack were mentioned. This sounds like there will be some interesting developments coming in the future for cloud optimised hardware which will make a difference not only for Amazon internally but also for those deploying private cloud software.

Combined with the work from the Open Compute project this should hopefully see some real improvements not only in performance but also with power utilisation, which is still a big concern.
